Sanbolic Powering HP Rich
Media System
Melio FS used for Rich Media SAN
at ENSA@Works Conference
Amsterdam, the Netherlands January
21, 2003 - Sanbolic, Inc. developer
and manufacturer of clustered, distributed file system for shared
storage solutions is powering the rich media demo at HP's ENSA@Works
Conference in Amsterdam this week.
The HP Rich Media division is specialized in the
design of solutions for the Media industry. Their demo during the
event will show high resolution live video encoding, video editing
and concurrent playback, on systems simultaneously sharing a common
storage volume.
Underlying hardware is HP's EVA storage and EVO
HP Workstations, and the applications for encoding, editing and
playback applications are a mix of products such as Pinnacle Liquid,
and Windows Media encoder.
To allow concurrent access of the video files
on a single volume, HP evaluated file systems that embed lock management.
"We selected Melio FS because of its distributed
lock management mechanism that has shown good performance when we
tested it with our stress tools and analyzers, reproducing the behavior
of editing stations accessing concurrently the same shared video
files. The file system is one of the critical components when designing
a solution for video industries; the strongest requirements from
this industry are reliability, scalability in capacity with no limit
in file size, scalability in bandwidth, capability to afford several
systems accessing concurrently a video file and no compromise regarding
the throughput accuracy. Melio FS is a very promising file system
for this industry; this is why we have setup a demo with encoding
editing and playback to show some of its capabilities during ENSA@WORK,
our worldwide storage event," says Olivier Brun, Consultant
Media Industry at HP.
Melio FS is a highly scalable, shared journaling
file system that will provide heterogeneous operating system support.
Melio FS will not only be used in shared or clustered workgroup
environments, where performance and simultaneous access to data
is a requirement of the workflow process, but also in storage administration
and scalable NAS environments where management and scalability are
of importance, and in intense grid-computing applications handling
heavy transactions, where reliability and capacity are the main
priorities.
Following the show HP Rich Media is planning to
run a permanent demo of Melio FS on their proof of solution platform
located in the European competence centers in Annecy and Grenoble.
These two competence centers are the only ones existing inside HP
at worldwide level for the Media industry, and where all their customers
and partners in the Media industry come for workshops, proof of
concepts, benchmarks, and solution design.
