Sanbolic Releases Melio FS
Sanbolic Targets Enterprise Data
Centers, Cluster Computing Applications and Workgroup Environments
with Release of Melio File System
Watertown, MA, February 19, 2003
- Sanbolic, Inc. announces the release
of Melio FS. Melio FS is a shared journaling file system has been
designed for high performance, unlimited scalability, simple data
management, and heterogeneous operating system support.
Melio FS presents a single shared storage pool
across all servers attached to the centralized storage. This greatly
simplifies the access to and administration of data and storage.
It improves computing resource flexibility and scalability of applications.
Melio FS is designed for ease of installation and use, and addresses
customer needs in workgroup environments, as well as enterprise
data center and cluster or grid computing applications.
"The initial specifications for Melio FS
were developed late in 2000 when Sanbolic joined a group of vendors
that were developing a high performance computing solution for telecommunication
applications. The system was comprised of many clustered servers
operating as a single computer, requiring high availability with
simultaneous write and read access to data on the storage, high
performance allowing heavy transaction handling, integrated SAN
and NAS for storing and serving data, and multiple operating system
support. There requirements are becoming more common also in the
financial and insurance industries, in the pharmaceutical industry,
in data mining, seismic analysis, and in digital content creation,
as well as in general enterprise data- and data processing centers,"
says Eva Helén, VP of Business Development at Sanbolic, Inc.
Melio FS has demonstrated the potential of shared
file systems in mixed SAN and NAS environments using a mixture of
1Gb and 2Gb fibre channel as well as iSCSI. Customer flexibility
in choosing Fibre channel, iSCSI, or NAS access to shared data will
be important in extending the SAN to departmental environments.
Melio FS architecture will support both Windows and Unix requirements
and is now commercially available with Windows drivers.
Sanbolic has been running an extensive beta program
for the past six months, and the first customer installations are
currently being made. A Boston based ASP has successfully been running
Melio FS since mid-December. Doug Kling the Director of Network
Operations says: "Melio FS was instrumental not only in simplifying
our system infrastructure, but also in providing us with high data
availability which is crucial for customer satisfaction. Melio FS
was installed on the first four server clusters in December and
we expect to install it on an additional 20 server clusters this
quarter. Melio FS is breaking the barrier between SAN reliability
and NAS availability for our enterprise, something we had only wished
for before now."
