Sanbolic Announces Melio FS
The first cross platform file system
designed specifically for SAN
San Jose, CA, June 5, 2001 -
Sanbolic, a developer of software and solutions
for storage area networks (SANs), today announced Melio File System
(FS) at SAN 2001 in San Jose, California. Melio FS is a distributed
journaling file system with support for heterogeneous operating
systems, designed specifically to meet the demands of storage networking.
Melio FS is a distributed file system that allows
multiple users to access files on the storage as if they were their
own. The metadata is contained within the file system on the storage
and it is designed so it is decentralized allowing high independence
of workstations. The distributed locking mechanism allows read and
write operations to different parts of the same file to be performed
simultaneously from multiple machines. Any network protocol can
be used to transport the locks between the machines and the locks
are cached so the network traffic is kept to a minimum.
Melio FS is also a journaling file system where
updates to directories in the file system constantly are written
into a log on a disk. In case of system failure the journaling file
system ensures that the system data on the disk is restored to its
pre crash configuration and recovers unsaved data within a few seconds.
Melio FS journals all metadata operations, allowing recovery of
file system structures without taking the volume off-line.
Melio FS supports multiple operating systems,
since the file system layout is OS independent. This allows better
utilization of existing hardware and infrastructure and means that
the users are not confined to a single platform. The June 2001 alpha
release of Melio FS is compatible Windows 2000.
"Melio FS is the first step toward truly
liberating information from geography. The promise of storage area
networks is to enable a more flexible use of storage assets,"
stated William P. Hurley, Program Manager, Yankee Group. "Melio
FS allows for the physical consolidation and logical decentralization
of information."
Beta release of the file system is scheduled for
early Q4, 2001 and the product is expected to start shipping during
the first quarter of 2002.
